footballportugal Podcast – 23/11/09

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

A two-part podcast after a week’s break, focussing on the past weekend’s Taça de Portugal fourth round ties and Portugal’s successful World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In the Taça, Sporting’s new manager Carlos Carvalhal got a victory from his first game in charge of the Leões, but only after quite a scare as their opponents, Pescadores da Costa de Caparica, went into the break with a 1-0 lead. Sporting’s Lisbon rivals Benfica were dumped out of the Cup at home to Vitória de Guimarães thanks to a goal from Gustavo Lazaretti. There were other shock exits, too, with Leiria, Leixões and Académica all being defeated by lower league opposition.

In part 2, we talk about Portugal and Bosnia-Herzegovina. We ask just where Raul Meireles found his form after playing so poorly all season, and why did the Bosnian football authorities show such disrespect to Portugal?

Please let us know your thoughts about the podcast and give us your predictions for this weekend’s Lisbon clássico (Sporting v Benfica).

Thanks for listening,

Steve and Phil

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Fresh from our time off due to international commitments, we give you a somewhat shorter than normal podcast this week.

In Part 1 we focus on the news that Portugal will be playing against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off for the World Cup 2010. There were two above-average performances in Portugal’s two home wins which assured them of second place in the group behind Denmark. We focus on Portugal’s performances, their upcoming opposition and whether or not the play-off should be played at Estádio da Luz.

In Part 2 we concentrate on this weekend’s Taça de Portugal third round games. Marítimo and Olhanense were both victims of giant killers – or tomba-gigantes – Santa Clara and Valencianos, respectively. All the other teams in the top flight sail through to the next round. And finally, we’ll bring you up to date on the latest movements on the managerial merry-go-round in the Portuguese top flight.

Please let us know your thoughts on the podcast, especially whether it’s possible to get a direct flight from Madeira to The Azores.

Thanks for listening,

Steve and Phil

footballportugal Podcast – 01/06/09

In our last Podcast of the season, we cast an eye over this year’s Taça de Portugal Final, won … perhaps inevitably … by FC Porto over first-timers Paços de Ferreira. A single, early goal by Lisandro López, possibly his last for Porto, gave Porto the 6th dobradinha (’double’) in their history. Phil describes a bit of the atmosphere surrounding the Big Day, and we talk about the controversy regarding the use of the National Stadium (Jamor) for the Final. Elsewhere in the first part, there’s mention of an eerie mist and a tasty but tooth-ruining pão com chouriço.

In the second part, we reveal the listeners’ Top Five Players of the Year (thanks to all those who sent in their votes!) and give our own ideas on Best Players, Best Coach, Best Club … and Worst Hair, among other prestigious awards (trophies delivered to footballportugal Podcast Towers under armed police escort).

And so we leave you for the summer. We’ll be back in late August, at least in written form (here and at www.footballportugal.com.pt), with the podcasts to be resumed in mid-September.

Hope you’ll join us then.

Have a great summer! (… and for those of you in the southern hemisphere … as good a winter as possible …)

footballportugal Podcast – 27/04/09

We’ve got a little bit of politics for you in this, our 50th podcast. With last Saturday being the 35th anniversary of ‘The Carnation Revolution’ here in Portugal, we devote the second half of the pod to a beginner’s guide to what happened on 25th April 1974. Along with some historical details, we also give our own opinions on what the revolution means to the majority of Portuguese who are too young to actually recall the event first hand. Not only that, but we’ll play out with the fantastic song which signalled the start of the revolution to the waiting troops, E Depois do Adeus by Paulo de Carvalho.

The first half of the podcast will be a bit more conventional: an overview of the events of the week on the football pitches of Portugal. The finalists of the Taça de Portugal have been decided, Paços de Ferreira making the first trip to Jamor in their 59-year history to face FC Porto.

In the league, there’s no change at the top with all three Grandes winning. At the bottom of the table, Trofense are looking doomed after a last minute goal saw them lose 1-0 away to Braga. Belenenses join them in the drop zone after a 1-2 home defeat to Nacional.

Please feel free to comment or correct any aspect of the podcast; there may be many things we’ve left out or got wrong with regards to ‘The Carnation Revolution’, and we’ll be happy to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for listening,

Controversy is the winner of this year’s Taça da Liga, with referee Lucilio Baptista deciding who would win the second edition of the competition. For Benfica and Sporting, the prize may have been meaningless but it was about all they had left in what is looking like yet another season chasing Porto’s shadow.

Sporting left the Algarve complaining of robbery and Pedro Silva left without even a loser’s medal, preferring to leave it where he had lobbed it, somewhere near the centre circle of the terribly maintained Estádio do Algarve pitch. Benfica won the game on penalties; Quim was the hero but few in Portugal are concerned with Quim’s great saves. The fact is that this game should never have reached a penalty shoot-out and in part 1 of the podcast we’ll give our opinions on the final that was dominated by Lucilio Baptista’s ineptness.

In part 2, Steve will give his verdict on the first half hour of the Taça de Portugal semi-final first leg, and Phil will fill in the rest with Raul Meireles re-finding his best form for Porto after a disappointing start to his season. We’ll discuss Braga’s exit from the UEFA Cup and also preview Portugal’s vital World Cup qualifier against Sweden this Saturday at the Estádio do Dragão.

Keep your comments coming, and we’ll see you next week.

Thanks for listening,

Steve and Phil.
