footballportugal Podcast – 01/02/10

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Scandal and controversy are the main themes of this week’s podcast, with phone taps, bribes, prostitutes, punch-ups and mass brawls taking the headlines in the Portuguese football newspapers.

But we’ve still got some football to report and report it we shall! In part 1 we give the once over on another Braga win which was blessed with as much good fortune as it was stoic defending. Porto’s new signing Rúben Micael makes an impressive debut at his old club Nacional but in their 0-4 they had a bit of help from the referee. Benfica impressed at home to Guimarães, especially Carlos Martins, who must’ve eaten three Shredded Wheat for breakfast that morning.

In part 2 we talk about Braga allegedly attempting to bribe Leixões; Hulk and Sapunaru going ape in the Benfica tunnel and getting caught on camera; Pinto da Costa getting his phone tapped and calling Sporting’s kit man “a retard”; and Sá Pinto choosing a well placed punch on Liedson’s face over a career as Director of Football for Sporting,

Please keep your comments coming. Say anything you like, but just let us know that you’re listening and hopefully that you appreciate what we’re doing.

Thanks for listening,

footballportugal Podcast – 02/02/09

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

The clowns are organising proceedings yet again in Portuguese football as the farcical situation that is the semi-final of the Taça da Liga goes from bad to worse. The two semi-finals are supposed to take place this Wednesday, but with the deciding committee not giving a verdict until tomorrow (03/02/09) Benfica don’t know if they’ll be playing Belenenses or Vitória da Guimarães. Not only that but Porto president Pinto da Costa was on the phone to Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco telling him he won’t be bringing his Dragões to Lisbon if Benfica’s semi-final is called off. We’ll give our verdict on this cock-up in part one of the podcast, along with analysis of the two most exciting games of the weekend, both involving the teams whose goal average is causing the problems in the Taça da Liga: Guimarães, who beat Setúbal 2-4 at Estádio do Bomfim, and Belenenses, who lost 1-3 at home to Porto.

In part 2 we’ll discuss Benfica’s talismanic match-winner Pedro Mantorras, who scored Benfica’s winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Rio Ave, played in atrocious conditions at Estadio da Luz. Finally we’ll discuss some of the latest transfers to take place before the closing of the transfer window.

Please keep the comments coming; it’s great to hear alternative points of view.

Thanks for listening!

footballportugal Podcast – 28/04/08

Monday, April 28th, 2008

The tension is mounting as the season draws to a close.

In part 1 we focus on the teams aiming to get those Champions League spots. Benfica stay in with a shout after beating a soon to be Jorge Jesus-less Belenenses 2-0. Despite wide spread rumours suggesting Porto would make things easy for Guimarães, Ricardo Quaresma inspires the Dragons to a 5-0 thrashing. The Vítoria supporters are out in force… so much so that the Guimarães team bus had a hard job getting into the stadium. Finally, Sporting amble on, coming from behind to beat Marítimo 2-1 thanks to two goals by the normally useless Romagnoli.

In part 2 the focus is on the battle against relegation. Leiria give up the fight but Leixões keep on punching with their 1-3 away win. Paços lose 1-2 away to an António Caldas-managed Braga and Nacional manager/thug Pedrag Jokanovic is under fire from the Nacional supporters as they lose 0-3 at home to Académica, who are now safe from the drop. Boavista lose away to Naval thanks to a Delfim goal, who is then sent off in the second half. We also have more on the drama unfolding in the Liga da Honra and yet more insight into Portuguese natural spring water.

Finally, in part 3 we talk about the various nicknames, or alcunhas, of some of the more famous Portuguese players, presidents and teams. We’re sure to have missed out loads so we’d be really grateful if you could let us know of any interesting ones that we’ve forgotten to mention. Thanks for listening.

The Second footballportugal Podcast

Monday, January 14th, 2008

It’s our pleasure to present to you our second podcast. This time we’ve split it into three parts in an attempt to appear more organised.

Part 1 reviews the weekend’s results, amongst which were Benfica’s disappointing 0-0 home draw to Leixões, Porto’s 4-0 destruction of Braga and the continuing saga of the Sporting crisis with their 1-1 away draw to Académica. In amongst this we’ll explain what a “trivela” is and the connection between grilled chickens and dodgy keepers.

Part 2 finds us trying to explain why Porto have been so dominant in Portugal over the past two decades, the iron fisted rule of Pinto da Costa and their “Claque” (Ultras group) the “Super Dragões”, allegations of corruption in the Golden Whistle scandal and their prospects in this year’s Champion’s League competition.

Finally, in Part 3, we review last week’s Carlsberg Cup results, preview next weekend’s Taça de Portugal games and try to address whether Brazilians naturalised as Portuguese players are a good thing for the Portuguese national team.

Lastly we’d like to apologise for any sound problems that may have occurred during the podcast (bumping of microphones, popping, hissing and the rumble of passing No. 28 trams), we hope they don’t distract you from the show.

As always, if you wish to contact us you can do so by e-mail which is: info@footballportugalpodcast.com

Thank you for listening.
