footballportugal Podcast – 02/12/09

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

A later than usual podcast due to Steve’s recent dental surgery, which fortunately ran better than Manuel Machado’s recent hernia operation. The Nacional manager is currently in an induced coma trying to recover from septicaemia; we hope he can pull through and make a speedy recovery.

In part one of this week’s podcast we’ve decided to focus on the performances of individual players rather than teams. Ruben Micael continues to impress everyone at Nacional, Targino is a revelation at Guimarães, Miguel Veloso has managed to find some hunger on the pitch rather than off it and Hulk rediscovers his form. In one of the more entertaining games of the weekend, Belenenses’ Lima and Marítimo’s Manu put on a fantastic show and Braga’s Mossoró leaves our mouths watering with his hard-working yet skilful midfield performances. Plus, Phil waxes lyrical once more about Acádemica’s Sougou; it must be love.

In part two we talk about the difference a few sacked managers, or rather their replacements, have made in turning this year’s Liga into a far more balanced and interesting competition than it was at the beginning of the season.

We hope you enjoy the podcast. Keep your comments coming … no matter how outlandish (Nuno!)

Thanks for listening,

Steve & Phil

footballportugal Podcast Euro 2008 Special 3

Monday, June 16th, 2008

It’s cocktails by the pool for the first string of the Portuguese Selecção whilst the second string huff and puff their way to a poor 0-2 defeat to the host country, Switzerland. Qualification had been secured earlier in the week when Portugal, led by the reborn Deco, cruised past an unimpressive Czech Republic team by 3 goals to 1.

In part one of the podcast we review both games, concentrating on the strengths and weaknesses the squad has shown over the past 10 days. Whilst the first 11 are crowned by the Portuguese press as all-conquering heroes, the losing second string are critically savaged and we pay particular attention to the treatment dished out to Miguel Veloso. With Quim out of the tournament, we question the reasoning behind Nuno’s inclusion at the expense of the impressive Eduardo. We also discuss Petit’s musical preferences: hard rock or rockin’ pimba?

In part two we preview Portugal’s quarter final game against Germany this Thursday. We also discuss Luíz Felipe Scolari’s move to Chelsea and how his rather hypocritical actions might affect the mentality of the team in the run up to the game. Not only is Scolari’s timing poor but his English in a recent press conference leaves absolutely everything there can possibly be to be desired. We wonder if Felipão even knows how to translate his nickname into English.

Keep the comments coming in – it was great to receive so many after the Turkey game. We’ll be back on Thursday, straight after the game; let’s hope it’s not our last podcast of the season!

Força Portugal!

footballportugal Podcast – 19/05/08

Monday, May 19th, 2008

It was cup final weekend in Portugal Sporting Clube de Portugal took FC porto at the National Stadium in Jamor, on the outskirts of Lisbon. Phil went to the game and Steve watched it on TV, so in part 1 you’ll hear all the details of the game, settled in extra-time by two goals from Sporting’s new lightweight striker, Rodrigo Tiuí.

In Part 2 it’s awards time at the podcast as we both produce our Top 5 players of the season and list other players who have caught our attention. We also produce a rejects 11 of players that Scolari left out of the Portuguese squad to go to Euro 2008. Maybe he just didn’t fancy them or maybe he just doesn’t know that there are clubs in Portugal outside the 3 grandes.

Finally, in part 3 we discuss the various manoeuvres of players and managers in and out of the doors of clubs in the Portuguese league.

There’ll be no podcast next week, our next podcast will be the first of our Euro 2008 specials and should be available the day after Portugal’s friendly-game against Georgia in Viseu on 31st May. We’ll then post a podcast each day after Portugal play in Euro 2008.

As you might have seen below, we’ve been nominated for an award on Football Fancast for the best football podcast of the last football season. You can vote for us by clicking here

As ever, please leave us any comments you may have here on the website or by e-mail at info@footballportugalpodcast.com

The Fourth footballportugal Podcast

Monday, January 28th, 2008

!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

Welcome once again to our special “clássico” podcast. As weekends go in Portuguese football, you’ll rarely find one as exciting as this and that’s why we’re running a little bit longer than normal.

Part 1 reviews the weekend’s games, specifically Sporting’s shock 2-0 demolition of Porto . We’ll let you know what we think about Porto ’s Brazilian international keeper, Helton, and I’ll have to eat my words regarding Paulo Bento’s faith in Sporting’s 19 year old goalkeeping prospect Rui Patrício. Kind words will be heaped upon Oscar Cardozo as his two goals helped Benfica beat Vítória de Guimarães 1-3 in Guimarães, but Phil doesn’t like the attitude of Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira. Also, shock of shocks, Leiria won (as I predicted), beating Académica 3-1.

Part 2 reviews the January transfers, or rather lack of them, and looks at the possibility of Portugal ’s new goalscoring hope, Makakula, joining Benfica on Tuesday (29/01/08).

Part 3 concentrates on the “Selecçao” and Luíz Filipe Scolari’s recent comments that Miguel Veloso’s arse may be a bit too big to fit on the bus to the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland this summer.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us by either leaving a comment or by e-mailing us at info@footballportugal.com

The podcast will be a little bit late next week because it’s Carnival weekend, so don’t expect the fifth podcast until Wednesday 6th February.

Thank you for listening.
