A season-ending, penultimate podcast celebrating all things benfiquista, as the Águias finally secure their 32nd Portuguese league title with a scrappy 2-1 win against 10-man Rio Ave. Braga could only draw with Nacional in Madeira, so Benfica would have won the title regardless of the result at the Luz. Steve was at the game and Phil was flicking between channels; we give you our verdict on whether Benfica’s success was acquired by fair means or foul.

In part two, we cover the other games of the weekend, including Marítimo’s smash and grab raid to Guimarães, beating them 1-2 to claim the final European qualifying place against all expectations. We also congratulate Beira Mar and Portimonense, who will be playing in the top flight next season after winning promotion from the Liga Vitalis.

In part three we discuss the surprises in Carlos Queiroz’s Portuguese squad, which only includes one Benfica player and no João Moutinho.

Finally, we ask all listeners to send in your votes for the footballportugal podcast player of the season award. Please send your top 5 players of the season, ordered from 1 to 5, to our e-mail (info@footballportugalpodcast.com). Votes need to arrive before 4pm on Monday 17th May.

Thanks for listening,

Another podcast from Steve and Phil, those English senhores of Portuguese football knowledge and opinion.

It’s back to the traditional three parts this week as we let you know about this weekend’s round of games. In Part 1 we focus on the contrasting fortunes of Porto and Sporting; the former are looking very ordinary as they drop points at home to Paços de Ferreira, while the latter look red hot as the rejuvenated Lisbon team beat Nacional 3-2 thanks to 2 excellent Liedson goals.

In part 2 we focus on a familiar old topic, dodgy refereeing. Benfica definitely benefitted from some outrageous refereeing decisions as they smashed Marítimo 0-5 in Madeira. Braga were also fortunate to get a dubious penalty as they broke André Villas Boas’ impressive 100% home record in charge of Académica to come away with a 0-2 victory.

Finally, in part 3 we focus on the other games we failed to cover in the earlier parts. Setúbal are impressing Steve without actually winning games, Castro might be Olhanense’s answer to Steven Gerrard, Belenenses are awful again and Rio Ave really missed Fábio Farias and the player André Vilas (with one ‘l’) Boas as Ronny-tastic Leiria beat them 0-2.

Please do leave us some comments and let us know you’re out there and listening. It was very sad for us to have nobody to talk to but ourselves this weekend!

Thanks for listening,

It’s a pleasure for us here at footballportugal to bring you our first ever podcast. It will be recorded every week and uploaded here sometime late on Monday evening. Each week we’ll discuss the weekend’s results, the main stories being reported in the Portuguese football press and any other odds and ends that might have caught our attention. Our first podcast is a slightly shambolic affair, we apologise for the varying sound levels, incessant rambling and copious amounts of verbal ticks, but with time we expect to improve.

On this week’s podcast, we discuss the big fight between Luisão and Katsouranis of Benfica in their away draw at Vitória de Setúbal, Carlos Parede’s exit from Sporting and the increasing pressure upon trainer Paulo Bento after their 2-0 away defeat to Boavista. Porto keep winning and we’re heaping the praise upon Sunday’s match-winner, Raul Meireles, a.k.a “syringes”, and we’ll be describing in minute detail the own-goal of the season, scored by Ricardo Esteves of Marítimo in their 2-1 home victory over Leixões. Last but not least, we’ll be telling you what a “chapéu” is in Portuguese football and why the Vítoria de Setúbal forward Cláudio Pitbull would’ve liked to have made one for Benfica goalkeeper Quím this weekend.
