footballportugal Podcast – 19/04/10

Monday, April 19th, 2010

A two-part, slightly rambling podcast for you to enjoy this week. There has been so much happening since we’ve been gone and it was a mighty task trying to remember the events of the past fortnight or so, but we did our best.

In part one, we focus on the top. Benfica need just 4 points from 3 games to clinch the title, but they didn’t look great this weekend against Académica. Braga put in a good display against Leixões to maintain their excellent record this season and should finish with a points tally which would have given them the title in either of the two preceding championships. Porto rumble on but face loud booing from the 28,000 who turned up to see their 3-0 win against Guimarães.  Finally, Sporting frustrate us – this time it’s new Director of Football, Costinha, exerting his poorly judged dominance over a team that could probably do better without him.

In part two we focus on the relegation battle. Belenenses are as good as relegated, but Leixões, Olhanense, Setúbal and Académica all have a fight on their hands to stay in the top tier of Portuguese football.

Please keep your comments coming. Let us know who you think will win the league and who will be relegated.

Thanks for listening,

footballportugal Podcast – 01/12/08

Monday, December 1st, 2008

It’s a holiday podcast, with Portugal taking the day off work to celebrate the restoration of independence from their nasty Spanish neighbours. Due to the fact that two of the grandes are playing later tonight (Monday 1st December) we’ve decided to just bring you a 2-part podcast, a podcastinho if you will.

In part one we report the welcome news of the cancellation of Estrela Amadora’s strike action after their players received two months’ worth of payments owed to them. We also report on Leixões, who are still top of the table despite a 1-1 draw at home to Naval. However, their star player Wesley has announced he will be moving to Abu Dhabi at the end of December, to play for Al Wahda  FC. With many other Leixões players announcing their desire to move to bigger clubs in the new year, we discuss whether Leixões are doing the right thing, letting what is a fantastic starting 11 break up so easily.

In part two we cast our critical eye over the abominable displays of Sporting and Benfica in last week’s European games. Both teams were thrashed to within an inch of their lives by Barcelona and Olympiakos, respectively, results that will be hard for both to live down.

footballportugal Podcast – 17/11/08

Monday, November 17th, 2008

A luta continua in the Portuguese Liga this week, with Estrela de Amadora’s unpaid players setting in motion the unfortunate process of a players’ strike that will no doubt gain world-wide publicity and shame the game of football here in Portugal. We concentrate on the situation in the first part of the the podcast, trying to find some solutions to the whole sorry mess that is becoming all too sadly commonplace in the Portuguese game. We’ll also report on Estrela’s 0-1 defeat away to Benfica, who struggled to a win against an Amadora 11 who had spent most of the week in negotiations with their union leader, Joaquim Evangelista, rather than actually training for the game. What’s more, our word of the week will ensure that you’re never short of a four letter word or two whenever you’re visiting Portugal.

In Part 2 we look at the other games that took place at the weekend, most notably Leixões’ excellent 1-0 win over Sporting at Alvalade. Porto get back to their winning ways against a lacklustre Guimarães and Paços find their first win of the season against Naval with the Liga’s top scorer William netting the winner.

Finally, in part 3, we report on Operation Fair Play, which saw 30 members of Benfica’s claque The No Name Boys arrested in raids across the country on suspicion of drug trafficking.

There’ll be no podcast next week because of family commitments but we’ll be back in two weeks’ time to bring  you the latest about Portuguese football in English!

Thanks for listening.

footballportugal Podcast – 27/10/08

Monday, October 27th, 2008

With Porto looking as vulnerable as they did the last time they lost the Liga here in Portugal, being deservedly beaten 2-3 at home to Leixões, it was up to Benfica and Sporting to take advantage. Benfica just about did, beating Naval 2-1 at home. However, Sporting wasted their opportunity to gain points on the Dragons, only managing a 0-0 draw against Paços de Ferreira in a boring game at Mata Real. Sitting top of the table are Nacional, who beat Setúbal 1-0 at home thanks to a Nené penalty. Phil reports on Belenenses against Vitória Guimarães, where Zé Pedro scored both goals in a 1-1 draw. The picture below shows the almost empty stadium during the game, which was played on a beautiful autumn evening. Some people just don’t know what they’re missing. So, Nacional are on equal points with Leixões whilst Benfica trail a point behind in 3rd place with 12 points. We review all of this and more in part 1 of the podcast.

Porto’s misery at the weekend only built upon the despair felt by the Portistas who witnessed their side’s first home defeat (0-1) in 20 Champions League games against Dynamo Kiev last Tuesday. Despite Porto’s failure, it was a great week for Portuguese teams in Europe, with victories for Sporting and Sporting Braga, and Benfica came home from Berlin happy to take a point which could have been three were it not for a terrible tactical decision by Quique Flores, replacing the effective Katsouranis with the ineffective Carlos Martins in the 71st minute of the 1-1 draw, inviting Hertha Berlin to score the equaliser. This will all be discussed in part 2 along with our reaction to Portsmouth’s sour grapes after being royally whipped by Braga in the UEFA Cup.

Finally, in part 3 we give an update on Vitória the eagle’s bid for freedom from the Luz, on Nacional’s old lady claque, and a blow by blow account of each stone thrown (allegedly) at Cristian Rodrigues’ car by the Porto claque Super Dragões last Saturday night.

Keep in touch! Please leave your comments; we know you’re out there and listening so please let us know what you think of the podcast or what’s happening in the Portuguese league right now. Leave your messages on the comments section of the site, or e-mail us at info@footballportugalpodcast.com

footballportugal Podcast – 12/05/08

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The final whistle blows on the 2007/8 Portuguese league championship and our Podcast do futebol Portguês brings you the winners, the losers, the punished and the lightly punished.

In Part 1 we look at which clubs will be sharing the Champion’s League millions, the UEFA Cup thousands and the Liga da Honra loose change. All three Champion’s League contenders win at home, sparking scenes of joy for Sporting and Guimarães. However, despite the disappointment of only qualifying for the UEFA Cup, there are some heart-warming scenes at the Estadio da Luz as Rui Costa plays his final game of competitive football. At the other end of the table, a dramatic last minute goal scored by Leiria against Paços condemns them to the Liga da Honra next season. Leixões lost at home to Maritimo but stay up regardless.

In Part 2 we give a round up to the decisions made by the disciplinary committee of the Liga de Clubes. Boavista suffer harsh treatment whilst Porto escape lightly for committing what was more or less the same crime. We give our opinions in full.

In the final part we’ll inform you of the players who will travel to Austria and Switzerland to represent Portugal in Euro 2008. Do we agree or disagree with “Mister” Scolari? Listen and find out.

Due to server space, some of our earlier podcasts are going to be removed (probably the first 5), so if you have any desire to listen to them and haven’t already done so, get in quick!

Don’t hesitate to give us your feedback on the topics we’ve discussed, post your opinions here on the site or e-mail us at: info@footballportugalpodcast.com

Thanks for listening.
