footballportugal Podcast – 30/09/09

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

A quick one while we were trying our best to get away in time to watch Porto V Atletico Madrid. In this week’s podcast we concentrate on 3 main subjects:

Subject 1 – Goalkeepers in Portugal: they’re a bit good aren’t they? Even the two goalkeepers we constantly bash, Sporting’s Rui Patrício and Porto’s Helton, looked on tip-top form between the sticks in last weekend’s clássico.

Subject 2 – Thrashings in the Liga: are teams weaker than ever? We discuss this and come up with a yes-ish and no-ish opinion. Despite there being a lot of very poor quality teams in this year’s Portuguese league, the two promoted teams are showing old hands how to be well organised and brave when facing bigger teams.

Subject 3 -  Olhanense’s amazing young players, Castro, Rabiola and Ukra. Despite losing their last two games, these three young players have caught the attention of football fans in the country. We give our opinion on their ability and their futures.

We’ll also talk a little bit about last weekend’s elections for the Portuguese government and look forward to this weekend’s upcoming fixtures.

Back at the normal time next week … with a following wind. Please keep your comments coming in. It’s always good to have new perspectives on the game here.

Thanks for listening,

footballportugal Podcast – 11/11/08

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

We’re back and technologically stable for our Taça de Portugal 4th round special podcast. There are just two parts in this week’s podcast, but each is as big as one of Hulk’s thighs - so be warned!

In part 1 we concentrate mostly on what is being hailed as the game of the season so far: Sporting against FC Porto at Alvalade. The game ended 1-1 after extra time, with Porto winning on penalties courtesy of some heroics from Helton, newly restored to the fold after chain-smoking Porto boss Jesualdo Ferreira had banished him to the stands for a few weeks. The game was played at a frenetic pace for the whole 120 minutes and will live long in the memory. Listen to part 1 to get our opinion on the game plus the other results from the 4th round of the Cup.

In part 2 we review Sporting’s great win in Europe at home to Shakhtar Donetsk, seeing them through to the final stages of the competition for the first time in its present format. Porto also got an unlikely win against Dynamo Kiev but Lucho’s last minute winner was somewhat soured by him stupidly removing his jersey in celebration, only to receive a second yellow card; he’ll now miss the vital CL game at Fenerbahçe. We also look at Sporting Braga’s heroics in Milan; Braga were unlucky not to come back to Portugal with 3 points under their belt, and it was a travesty of justice that they should come back with none at all. Benfica were outplayed by an impressive Galatasary at the Luz, and David Suazo scored Benfica’s 5000th goal at Guimarães in the league … or did he?

Welcome once again to our special “clássico” podcast. As weekends go in Portuguese football, you’ll rarely find one as exciting as this and that’s why we’re running a little bit longer than normal.

Part 1 reviews the weekend’s games, specifically Sporting’s shock 2-0 demolition of Porto . We’ll let you know what we think about Porto ’s Brazilian international keeper, Helton, and I’ll have to eat my words regarding Paulo Bento’s faith in Sporting’s 19 year old goalkeeping prospect Rui Patrício. Kind words will be heaped upon Oscar Cardozo as his two goals helped Benfica beat Vítória de Guimarães 1-3 in Guimarães, but Phil doesn’t like the attitude of Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira. Also, shock of shocks, Leiria won (as I predicted), beating Académica 3-1.

Part 2 reviews the January transfers, or rather lack of them, and looks at the possibility of Portugal ’s new goalscoring hope, Makakula, joining Benfica on Tuesday (29/01/08).

Part 3 concentrates on the “Selecçao” and Luíz Filipe Scolari’s recent comments that Miguel Veloso’s arse may be a bit too big to fit on the bus to the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland this summer.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us by either leaving a comment or by e-mailing us at info@footballportugal.com

The podcast will be a little bit late next week because it’s Carnival weekend, so don’t expect the fifth podcast until Wednesday 6th February.

Thank you for listening.
