We’re both beginning to believe here at footballportugal that this 2008/09 season of the Portuguese Liga has to be one of the most exciting and competitive for many years. Porto have extended their lead at the top of the table to 4 points over Benfica and Sporting, but their place at the top of the table is by no means secure, the sports papers in Portugal accusing the Dragões of over-reliance on the as-ever excellent Hulk, who put in another superb display against Paços de Ferreira. The Lisbon derby saw Sporting deservedly beat Benfica 3-2, Liedson the man of the match, but all of the Leões played well and they must be hoping for a good result at home against Bayern Munich in the Champions League this Wednesday. One team that is proving themselves in Europe is Sporting Braga, whose 3-0 demolition of Standard Liege left Phil running to the bookies, eager to place £5 of his hard earned cash on the Arsenalistas to win the UEFA Cup. Braga suffered from tired legs the following weekend but still managed to grind out a 1-2 away win against Naval.

In part 2 we report on the problems at Vitória de Guimarães, whose likeable manager, Manuel Cajuda, seems to be under pressure following the 0-1 home defeat to plucky Trofense. One manager whose time is up is Marítimo’s Brazilian Lori Sandri, who, despite guiding the Madeiran team to just outside the UEFA qualification places, is not deemed good enough by the Marítimo president following his team’s 3-1 defeat at Academica.

Along with the reviews of the rest of the weekend’s games, we touch on the main topic of conversation in Portuguese football right now: Liedson’s probable Portuguese naturalisation and the subsequent availability for the Portuguese national team. Will the Brazilian be able to resolve Carlos Queiros’ striker headaches?

footballportugal Podcast – 02/02/09

The clowns are organising proceedings yet again in Portuguese football as the farcical situation that is the semi-final of the Taça da Liga goes from bad to worse. The two semi-finals are supposed to take place this Wednesday, but with the deciding committee not giving a verdict until tomorrow (03/02/09) Benfica don’t know if they’ll be playing Belenenses or Vitória da Guimarães. Not only that but Porto president Pinto da Costa was on the phone to Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco telling him he won’t be bringing his Dragões to Lisbon if Benfica’s semi-final is called off. We’ll give our verdict on this cock-up in part one of the podcast, along with analysis of the two most exciting games of the weekend, both involving the teams whose goal average is causing the problems in the Taça da Liga: Guimarães, who beat Setúbal 2-4 at Estádio do Bomfim, and Belenenses, who lost 1-3 at home to Porto.

In part 2 we’ll discuss Benfica’s talismanic match-winner Pedro Mantorras, who scored Benfica’s winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Rio Ave, played in atrocious conditions at Estadio da Luz. Finally we’ll discuss some of the latest transfers to take place before the closing of the transfer window.

footballportugal Podcast – 25/08/08

The newly-named Liga Sagres has kicked off and our podcast is back to its usual Monday night schedule. This week we review the weekend’s results in full. The two Vítórias, Guimarães and Setúbal, battle out a 1-1 draw. Guimarães are struggling without the very effective Brazillian winger Alan, who moved in the summer to Jorge Jesus’ promising Sporting Braga. They beat Paços de Ferreira 0-2 at Mata Real. Trofense learn the pitfalls of zonal defending, conceding 3 goals in the first 30 minutes of their Liga début away to Sporting. They would eventually get a goal back thanks to a non-existent penalty given by referee Paulo Baptista, a decision that saw Paulo Bento screaming for justice after a series of poor refereeing decisions that have afflicted his Sporting side. It’s business as usual at the Dragão as Porto beat Belenenses comfortably 2-0 thanks to goals by Mariano and Hulk, and Benfica drop 2 points in their first game of the season, drawing 1-1 away to Rio Ave in foggy Vila do Conde. One of the biggest worries for Benfica is the poor form of their new Argentinian playmaker Pablo Aimar who failed to impress during the pre-season and looked lost for long periods on Sunday.

In part 2 we review Carlos Queiroz’s first game in charge of the Selecção, who won 5-0 against that mighty power of international football, the Faroe Islands. Less successful were the U-21 side, who were comfortably defeated 3-2 by the Czech Republic in a game where Inter Milan midfileder Pelé completely lost his head with a dangerous tackle that saw him taking an early bath.

Finally, in part 3 we talk about recent transfer speculation involving FC Porto’s Ricardo Quaresma, Benfica’s Nélson and the loan of Sporting’s Fabio Paim to Chelsea. We also look forward to next weekend’s fixtures, especially the Benfica v FC Porto clássico, and the European games involving Braga and Guimarães.

footballportugal Podcast – Supertaça & New Season Special

Welcome back to another season and another podcast. As regular listeners will have come to expect, this podcast is in three parts and aims to bring you up to date with the new 2008/2009 Portuguese football/soccer season.

In Part 1 we review Sporting’s 2-0 Supertaça victory against FC Porto (the Supertaça is played between last season’s Champions and the Taça de Portugal winners). The best team definitely won, Yannick Djalo scoring both goals to defeat what looked like a very much weakened Porto side still trying to recover from the loss of José Bosingwa and Paulo Assunção. Beyond the two Supertaça finalists, SL Benfica have assembled a group of new and exciting players and finally look a bit organised thanks to the modern techniques of coach Quique Flores. Although they lost last night’s first ever Eusébio Cup to Inter Milan on penalties, the future is certainly looking bright for Benfica.

In Part 2 we look at the outside contenders for the Liga title, Vitória Guimarães and Sporting Braga. Neither team were particulalry impressive in European competition this week, and with Porto’s cold shouldering of Guimarães, the family of Dom Afonso look a lot weaker team than they did last year, and with the addition of Benfica rejects Luis Filipe and Nuno Assis, one can only fear the worst for Guimarães. On the other hand, Braga seem rejuivenated, stealing Portista Alan from their neighbours and rivals and making shrewd signings in Meyong and Eduardo. Alongside the great and somewhat psychotic manager Jorge Jesus, they are definitely the team to watch this season.

In Part 3 we look over Carlos Quieros’ first squad as National Team coach and give our opinions on whether he is the right man for the job.

footballportugal Podcast – 12/05/08

The final whistle blows on the 2007/8 Portuguese league championship and our Podcast do futebol Portguês brings you the winners, the losers, the punished and the lightly punished.

In Part 1 we look at which clubs will be sharing the Champion’s League millions, the UEFA Cup thousands and the Liga da Honra loose change. All three Champion’s League contenders win at home, sparking scenes of joy for Sporting and Guimarães. However, despite the disappointment of only qualifying for the UEFA Cup, there are some heart-warming scenes at the Estadio da Luz as Rui Costa plays his final game of competitive football. At the other end of the table, a dramatic last minute goal scored by Leiria against Paços condemns them to the Liga da Honra next season. Leixões lost at home to Maritimo but stay up regardless.

In Part 2 we give a round up to the decisions made by the disciplinary committee of the Liga de Clubes. Boavista suffer harsh treatment whilst Porto escape lightly for committing what was more or less the same crime. We give our opinions in full.

In the final part we’ll inform you of the players who will travel to Austria and Switzerland to represent Portugal in Euro 2008. Do we agree or disagree with “Mister” Scolari? Listen and find out.
