footballportugal Podcast – end of season farewell

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It’s the podcast after the morning after the morning after the morning after the morning after the night before, as we get together way after the event to discuss the aftermath of Portugal’s lacklustre performance in their Euro 2008 quarter final defeat to Germany. 3-2 was a kind result for a team who looked more interested in next season’s club contracts than fighting to take Portugal on to European glory.

In part 1 of the podcast we pour a special amount of scorn and discontent on the performances of Ricardo Carvalho and King of the Frangos, Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo. Beyond the criticism of the players, we analyse Scolari’s positive impact on the Selecção and chat about the possible successors being bandied about by soon-to-be-leaving FPF president Gilberto Madail.

In part 2 we cover the recent club news in Portugal. Portistas are as happy as can be as UEFA shift their stance on their Champions League exclusion and let them back into the competition. Not only that, but they’ve managed to buy one of their enemy Benfica’s star players: the Uruguayan Christian Rodriguez. Benfica have to settle for never-ending rumours about second-rate players who may or may not join the Encarnardos for the start of next season. We also discuss the prices of season tickets for various clubs in Portugal for the 2008/09 season.

Finally, with this being the final podcast of the 2007/08 Portuguese football season, we’d just like to say a huge OBRIGADÍSSIMO to everyone who has listened to the podcast regularly, posted comments or sent e-mails of support, written about us on message-boards and blogs and generally just supported what we are trying to do. This has been a labour of love for the past 6 months and we really are paid back by the positive feedback we receive. If you want to contact us over the summer, you can by e-mail at info@footballportugalpodcast.com or by the comments section here.

Have a great summer, boas ferias and we’ll be back for the beginning of the new season.

footballportugal Podcast Euro 2008 Special 3

Monday, June 16th, 2008

It’s cocktails by the pool for the first string of the Portuguese Selecção whilst the second string huff and puff their way to a poor 0-2 defeat to the host country, Switzerland. Qualification had been secured earlier in the week when Portugal, led by the reborn Deco, cruised past an unimpressive Czech Republic team by 3 goals to 1.

In part one of the podcast we review both games, concentrating on the strengths and weaknesses the squad has shown over the past 10 days. Whilst the first 11 are crowned by the Portuguese press as all-conquering heroes, the losing second string are critically savaged and we pay particular attention to the treatment dished out to Miguel Veloso. With Quim out of the tournament, we question the reasoning behind Nuno’s inclusion at the expense of the impressive Eduardo. We also discuss Petit’s musical preferences: hard rock or rockin’ pimba?

In part two we preview Portugal’s quarter final game against Germany this Thursday. We also discuss Luíz Felipe Scolari’s move to Chelsea and how his rather hypocritical actions might affect the mentality of the team in the run up to the game. Not only is Scolari’s timing poor but his English in a recent press conference leaves absolutely everything there can possibly be to be desired. We wonder if Felipão even knows how to translate his nickname into English.

Keep the comments coming in – it was great to receive so many after the Turkey game. We’ll be back on Thursday, straight after the game; let’s hope it’s not our last podcast of the season!

Força Portugal!

footballportugal Podcast Euro 2008 Special 1

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

We’re back after our break a little later than expected thanks to a fire in the building where the footballportugal podcasts are stored, which meant we were off-line for the last couple of days.

Anticipation is building in Portugal and the public interest in the Portuguese national team in the run-up to Euro 2008 is intense. Training in Viseu, the Selecção impressed in the first half of their warm-up game against Georgia but did little to impress in the second half. We give a full run down of the game and the various training sessions that have been broadcast on Portuguese TV in part one of the podcast.

In Part 2 we talk about the media coverage and publicity campaigns being broadcasted on Portuguese TV. Quaresma, Nani and Simão are staring out of their coach listening to Bob Dylan singing Paths of Victory, Nuno Gomes is recording himself with his cellphone jumping up and down and getting excited and finally, various Portuguese craques (our word of the week) and supporting Portugal and a national supermarket chain.

Finally in part 3 we let you know about the various movments between clubs of managers and players, including the shock news of Paulo Assunção walking away from FC Porto.

We’re going to be back at the weekend, recording the next podcast straight after the final whistle of the Turkey V Portugal group game on Saturday. All things going well, it should be online by Sunday morning.

Keep the comments coming, we had a record amount of listeners for the last podcast and it’s always great to hear your opinion on what we say. Whether you agree or disagree or if you can correct us on any points we may have got wrong, please leave your views on the site or by e-mail at info@footballportugalpodcast.com

Força Portugal!

footballportugal Podcast – 19/05/08

Monday, May 19th, 2008

It was cup final weekend in Portugal Sporting Clube de Portugal took FC porto at the National Stadium in Jamor, on the outskirts of Lisbon. Phil went to the game and Steve watched it on TV, so in part 1 you’ll hear all the details of the game, settled in extra-time by two goals from Sporting’s new lightweight striker, Rodrigo Tiuí.

In Part 2 it’s awards time at the podcast as we both produce our Top 5 players of the season and list other players who have caught our attention. We also produce a rejects 11 of players that Scolari left out of the Portuguese squad to go to Euro 2008. Maybe he just didn’t fancy them or maybe he just doesn’t know that there are clubs in Portugal outside the 3 grandes.

Finally, in part 3 we discuss the various manoeuvres of players and managers in and out of the doors of clubs in the Portuguese league.

There’ll be no podcast next week, our next podcast will be the first of our Euro 2008 specials and should be available the day after Portugal’s friendly-game against Georgia in Viseu on 31st May. We’ll then post a podcast each day after Portugal play in Euro 2008.

As you might have seen below, we’ve been nominated for an award on Football Fancast for the best football podcast of the last football season. You can vote for us by clicking here

As ever, please leave us any comments you may have here on the website or by e-mail at info@footballportugalpodcast.com
