footballportugal Podcast – 09/03/09

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Welcome once again to our podcast sobre futebol português … in English. In part 1 we report on the action that took place in the Liga at the weekend. There’s no change at the top, with Porto crushing a limp Leixões 1-4 in Matosinhos. Leixões’ display was so weak that rumours are flowing that the game might’ve been fixed, RTP analyst Rui Santos suggesting on Sunday that Leixões ‘keeper Beto made little effort to save some of Porto’s goals. Benfica didn’t have it so easy, grinding out a tough 1-2 away win against Naval in the seaside town of Figueira da Foz. Sporting had a far more comfortable experience, winning 2-0 at home against Paços thanks to early goals from Liedson and Derlei. Braga dropped points away at Estrela da Amadora, who were unlucky not to win. At the bottom of the table, both Belenenses and Trofense lost, making their position in the Liga even more precarious.

In Part 2 we give ourselves yet another chance to discuss Portuguese mineral water by focussing on the Liga Vitalis, aka the Liga de Honra, the second tier. Top of the table are Jorge Costa’s Olhanense, with their ex-pat claque, who are a point clear of the Azorean team Santa Clara. Down at the bottom of the table, Phil’s beloved Boavista are dangerously close to the drop-zone, having been beaten at the weekend by fellow relegation battlers Oliveirense.

We also preview Porto’s Champions League second leg against Atlético Madrid and the heightened security necessary for the game.

Please add you comments about the podcast, especially your opinions regarding Rui Santos’ allegations of match fixing, and also: What is the hidden ingredient in Luso mineral water that is good for cats but bad for us humans?

Thanks for listening,

Steve and Phil

footballportugal Podcast – 05/05/08

Monday, May 5th, 2008

In this week’s podcast we review the penultimate games of the 2007/8 Portuguese league. Porto’s defeat at home to Nacional was one of the big surprises of the weekend; the 0-3 victory meant that Nacional got the double over Porto this season. On-loan Benfica player Fabio Coentrão got 2 great goals but it wasn’t enough to stop us passing our highly valued criticism of his terrible haircut.

Benfica dropped points yet again with a 0-0 draw away to Estrela Amadora, their 13th draw of the season. Sporting won 1-0 against the run of play at Paços and Guimarães drew 1-1 away to Belenenses but they’ll be somewhat dismayed at how on earth Belenenses left-back Rodrigo Alvim managed to stay on the pitch after a horrific 2 footed tackle on Carlitos earned him only a yellow card whilst poor Carlitos left the pitch and the game on a stretcher.

Setúbal and Marítimo both secured their places in next season’s UEFA Cup, with 2-0 victories over Leixões and Leiria respectively. We also give the latest on the unfortunate events that occurred between Guimarães and Leixões supporters at a service station on their way back to the north after games in the south of Portugal.

In Part 2, we report on Trofense’s promotion from the Liga da Honra, Penafiel’s relegation and Steve attempts the impossible by trying to explain the procedure to decide which two teams from the various Division II leagues will be promoted to the Liga da Honra.

Finally in Part 3 we talk a little bit about two players whose stars are ascending and descending: Cristiano Ronaldo and Mário Jardel. We also give our opinions on the recent form of Deco and Manuel Fernandes.

Keep the comments coming – either leave them here on the site or e-mail us at: info@footballportugalpodcast.com

Thanks for listening.

The Third footballportugal Podcast

Monday, January 21st, 2008

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

Welcome back to the third footballportugal podcast, probably the only place on the internet where you can hear two guys speak in English for over half an hour about Portuguese football (or Portuguese soccer, as our American listeners may prefer it).

In Part 1 we’ll be reviewing this weekend’s Taça de Portugal results. There were few surprises, Benfica struggled, Porto groaned and their fans managed to aim a few boos at their disgruntled footballing genius, Ricardo Quaresma. What’s more, Sporting scored four goals. There’ll be an in depth report on the Estrela Amadora Vs Sporting Braga game, along with some frank opinions on whether anyone really cares about the Taça de Portugal.

Part 2 will focus on the poor attendances at games in Portuguese football. Today’s edition of the daily Portuguese sports newspaper “a Bola” dedicated its first 4 pages to try and find a reason why attendances are so poor in Portugal. We’ll be summarising what they had to say and also offering our own tuppence on this matter.

Finally, in part 3, we’ll answer the question of the week (keep ‘em coming, e-mail: info@footballportugal.com) and previewing the weekend’s upcoming fixtures, most notably the clássico between Sporting and FC Porto next Sunday at 8 o’clock. We’ll also have a quick debate on bum advertising, can it ever be a good thing for the game?

We hope you enjoy this week’s podcast and please feel free to give us any feedback, either here on the site or by e-mail.

Thank you for listening.
