footballportugal Podcast – 21/12/09

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Welcome to our Christmas, New Year, last of 2009 and last of the noughties footballportugal podcast special! With 3 special parts, each more festive than the one before.

In Part 1 we concentrate on one of the most special Portuguese football fixtures of the year: the Benfica v Porto clássico. As ever, it was a tight game, fought tooth and nail between the two rivals, but the result was a little different from normal: Benfica won! It was their first victory (1-0) in this fixture for 4 years, the winner scored by Saviola.

In Part 2 we focus on all the other games in the league this weekend, which weren’t quite as special as the clássico but which all had their interest. Nacional fought Académica and fog to win 4-3 in a game which was delayed for a total of over 55 minutes. Braga failed to impress against Paços, but still got the three points. And Sporting narrowly beat Naval in a game that was so awful it was perhaps … special.  Setúbal beat Marítmo with two goals from Keita, who looks a bit special. And Belenenses manager João Carlos Pereira was sacked after Belenenses lost 0-1 in a tight game away to Leiria. You can’t be feeling very special if you lose your job just before Christmas, so our best wishes go out to Pereira, who comes across as being quite a nice chap.

In part 3 we concentrate on “bits and bobs” as Phil likes to call them [edit: Thanks, Steve ...]. The bits are reports from the lower leagues and news on clubs in crisis, like Atlético de Valdevez and Boavista. The bobs are our mid-season awards, including player of the year so far, best buy, worst buy, most impressive team and most disappointing team.

Please let us know your opinions, especially regarding the mid-season awards we gave. We both hope you have a very special Christmas and an even more special New Year.

footballportugal Podcast – 23/02/09

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

We’re both beginning to believe here at footballportugal that this 2008/09 season of the Portuguese Liga has to be one of the most exciting and competitive for many years. Porto have extended their lead at the top of the table to 4 points over Benfica and Sporting, but their place at the top of the table is by no means secure, the sports papers in Portugal accusing the Dragões of over-reliance on the as-ever excellent Hulk, who put in another superb display against Paços de Ferreira. The Lisbon derby saw Sporting deservedly beat Benfica 3-2, Liedson the man of the match, but all of the Leões played well and they must be hoping for a good result at home against Bayern Munich in the Champions League this Wednesday. One team that is proving themselves in Europe is Sporting Braga, whose 3-0 demolition of Standard Liege left Phil running to the bookies, eager to place £5 of his hard earned cash on the Arsenalistas to win the UEFA Cup. Braga suffered from tired legs the following weekend but still managed to grind out a 1-2 away win against Naval.

In part 2 we report on the problems at Vitória de Guimarães, whose likeable manager, Manuel Cajuda, seems to be under pressure following the 0-1 home defeat to plucky Trofense. One manager whose time is up is Marítimo’s Brazilian Lori Sandri, who, despite guiding the Madeiran team to just outside the UEFA qualification places, is not deemed good enough by the Marítimo president following his team’s 3-1 defeat at Academica.

Along with the reviews of the rest of the weekend’s games, we touch on the main topic of conversation in Portuguese football right now: Liedson’s probable Portuguese naturalisation and the subsequent availability for the Portuguese national team. Will the Brazilian be able to resolve Carlos Queiros’ striker headaches?

Please keep the comments coming, especially your opinions regarding Liedson … and any corrections regarding who Paulo Bento played for in Spain will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks for listening,

footballportugal Podcast – 09/02/09

All square at Estádio do Dragão this weekend and Benfica came away from their rival’s stadium thinking what could’ve been if referee Pedro Proença hadn’t been enganado by Lisandro Lopes, who took a dive on the edge of the penalty area to win the penalty that helped Porto secure a point at home. Unfortunately, we fail to explain what enganado means in part one of the podcast, so absorbed were we by the intensity of our post-match analysis, but as many of you will probably have guessed, it translates as tricked.

Sporting Clube de Portugal failed to gain points on their rival Grandes, falling victim to the ever impressive Sporting Braga, who convincingly beat SCP 2-3 at Avalade. Leixões re-found their winning touch courtesy of two goals from their Wesley replacement, Chumbinho. The Leixões ultras found time to protest at the omission of their goalkeeper Beto from Carlos Queirós’ Portugal squad to face Finland in a friendly next week. We discuss the merits of Queirós’ picks in part 1.

In part 2 we review the rest of the weekend’s matches, including what many are calling the most boring game in Portuguese history: Estrela Amadora’s scoreless home draw against Vítoria de Setúbal. Far more exciting is the form of Brazillian goal machine Nené, who netted another two goals to bring his tally to 12 for the season in Nacional’s 0-4 win away to Naval.

To round off the podcast we focus on the two cup competitions in Portugal, the Taça da Liga and the Taça de Portugal.

Keep the comments coming! It’s great to get your feedback and be able to respond; it also gives us something to do when we’re bored at work.

Thanks for listening,

Steve and Phil

footballportugal Podcast – 02/09/08

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

With one clássico, two jornadas and three bifanas under Steve’s belt, we’re just about ready to deliver the next instalment of our podcast about Portuguese football/soccer.

In part 1 we cover the two big games of the weekend. Firstly we review Sporting’s impressive 1-0 win away to Braga. Both teams look strong but it was a more aggressive and focussed Sporting Clube de Portugal that came away with the three points. João Perreira loses a little of our respect by stamping on João Moutinho’s inner thigh. Moutinho had only just recovered from a ball being blasted at his nether regions moments before the incident, so it wasn’t the greatest of nights for him. Apart from the battle of the Sportings we review Benfica and Porto’s 1-1 draw at the Luz last Saturday. Benfica suffered from a lack of fitness and fingers are pointing at the new Spanish fitness coach, Pako Ayesterán, who seems to have the ideas but not the practice. We’ll give an appraisal of the brilliant Lucho Gonzalez and Steve will apologise for being so hard on Maxi Pereira last season.

In part 2 we’ll look at the other games that were played over the weekend. Belenenses and Paços de Ferreira play out an exciting 2-2 draw which upset the home team and eventually led to the resignation of Belenenses president Fernando Sequeira. We go over the details in full and also talk a little bit about the structure of the club. Nacional’s 2-1 win over Naval mean they put a halt to Porto’s 1007 day dominance on the top spot of the Portuguese Liga and Leixões get back on the winning path with a 2-1 victory away to newbies Trofense.

In part 3 we’ve got a competition, thanks to www.portuguesefootballmemories.com who are going to give a DVD of any Benfica v Porto game of your choice if you can answer the question set at the beginning of Part 3. Send your answer to info@footballportugalpodcast.com. We’ll then look at the transfers that have happened in the Portuguese Liga and with Portuguese players in other parts of Europe before looking forward to Portugal’s upcoming games against Malta and Denmark. We’ll also look at who the Portuguese club sides will be facing in the UEFA Cup and Champions Leage.

Due to the international games and hiatus in the Liga programme, our next podcast won’t be until 22nd September or thereabouts.

Thanks for listening.

Welcome once again to our special “clássico” podcast. As weekends go in Portuguese football, you’ll rarely find one as exciting as this and that’s why we’re running a little bit longer than normal.

Part 1 reviews the weekend’s games, specifically Sporting’s shock 2-0 demolition of Porto . We’ll let you know what we think about Porto ’s Brazilian international keeper, Helton, and I’ll have to eat my words regarding Paulo Bento’s faith in Sporting’s 19 year old goalkeeping prospect Rui Patrício. Kind words will be heaped upon Oscar Cardozo as his two goals helped Benfica beat Vítória de Guimarães 1-3 in Guimarães, but Phil doesn’t like the attitude of Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira. Also, shock of shocks, Leiria won (as I predicted), beating Académica 3-1.

Part 2 reviews the January transfers, or rather lack of them, and looks at the possibility of Portugal ’s new goalscoring hope, Makakula, joining Benfica on Tuesday (29/01/08).

Part 3 concentrates on the “Selecçao” and Luíz Filipe Scolari’s recent comments that Miguel Veloso’s arse may be a bit too big to fit on the bus to the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland this summer.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us by either leaving a comment or by e-mailing us at info@footballportugal.com

The podcast will be a little bit late next week because it’s Carnival weekend, so don’t expect the fifth podcast until Wednesday 6th February.

Thank you for listening.
