It’s cocktails by the pool for the first string of the Portuguese Selecção whilst the second string huff and puff their way to a poor 0-2 defeat to the host country, Switzerland. Qualification had been secured earlier in the week when Portugal, led by the reborn Deco, cruised past an unimpressive Czech Republic team by 3 goals to 1.
In part one of the podcast we review both games, concentrating on the strengths and weaknesses the squad has shown over the past 10 days. Whilst the first 11 are crowned by the Portuguese press as all-conquering heroes, the losing second string are critically savaged and we pay particular attention to the treatment dished out to Miguel Veloso. With Quim out of the tournament, we question the reasoning behind Nuno’s inclusion at the expense of the impressive Eduardo. We also discuss Petit’s musical preferences: hard rock or rockin’ pimba?
In part two we preview Portugal’s quarter final game against Germany this Thursday. We also discuss Luíz Felipe Scolari’s move to Chelsea and how his rather hypocritical actions might affect the mentality of the team in the run up to the game. Not only is Scolari’s timing poor but his English in a recent press conference leaves absolutely everything there can possibly be to be desired. We wonder if Felipão even knows how to translate his nickname into English.
Keep the comments coming in – it was great to receive so many after the Turkey game. We’ll be back on Thursday, straight after the game; let’s hope it’s not our last podcast of the season!
Força Portugal!
