footballportugal Podcast – 23/09/08

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

We’re back and raring to go after our three-week intervalozinho. However, not much has changed since our last podcast with Nacional and Sporting still setting the early pace, both winning 2-0 against Guimarães and Belenenses respectively. One thing that has changed is Steve’s opinion about Rui Partrício, who had an impressive performance at the weekend. Naval are behind Nacional and Sporting in 3rd place; their 3-1 victory over Trofense brought about the first managerial casualty of the season with “Toni” Conceição making his way to the Centro de Emprego rather than the training ground this week. All of this will be discussed in Part 1.

In Part 2 we review Leixões’ impressive 2-0 victory against Braga, taking them into fourth place.  It’s a game for heroes and villains, with the magnificent Wesley our Superman and César Peixoto our Joker. Académica are in fifth place in the league, with a 1-0 win over Setúbal and FC Porto are languishing in sixth place after being held to a draw by the current stone in the shoes of the Grandes, Rio Ave.

In Part 3 we talk about Paços de Ferreira and Benfica’s 3-4 thriller, Benfica holding on for their lives with Quim looking uncharacteristically shaky between the posts. Tenth-placed Amadora draw 0-0 with second from bottom club Marítimo, who were also defeated 0-1 by Valência in the UEFA Cup last week. We also talk a little about the Portuguese Cup 3rd round draw and pick the winner of the competition we had in the last podcast (Answer: Vítor Baía’s shirt number in his second spell at FC Porto was 99).
