We’re back after a week on the sick bed (Steve, that is) and we’ve got a special Taça da Liga podcast for your listening pleasure.

Sadly, the Final of the Carlsberg Cup itself was a big let-down both on and off the pitch, with running battles between Porto supporters and police before the match, disturbances inside the ground, and Bruno Alves deciding a career in professional wrestling might have more legs in it than football currently does. We talk about all this and more in the first part of the podcast.

In part 2 we focus on a mixed couple of weeks of European action. A terrible performance from Porto saw them crash out of the Champions League at Arsenal. Sporting put up a good fight against Atlético Madrid, but indiscipline in the first game was perhaps the main cause of their losing on away goals over two legs. Benfica, on the other hand, never cease to amaze lately, and their fantastic last minute victory over Marseille in the Europa League has brought the international glory days back to the Luz once again.

footballportugal Podcast – 02/02/09

The clowns are organising proceedings yet again in Portuguese football as the farcical situation that is the semi-final of the Taça da Liga goes from bad to worse. The two semi-finals are supposed to take place this Wednesday, but with the deciding committee not giving a verdict until tomorrow (03/02/09) Benfica don’t know if they’ll be playing Belenenses or Vitória da Guimarães. Not only that but Porto president Pinto da Costa was on the phone to Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco telling him he won’t be bringing his Dragões to Lisbon if Benfica’s semi-final is called off. We’ll give our verdict on this cock-up in part one of the podcast, along with analysis of the two most exciting games of the weekend, both involving the teams whose goal average is causing the problems in the Taça da Liga: Guimarães, who beat Setúbal 2-4 at Estádio do Bomfim, and Belenenses, who lost 1-3 at home to Porto.

In part 2 we’ll discuss Benfica’s talismanic match-winner Pedro Mantorras, who scored Benfica’s winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Rio Ave, played in atrocious conditions at Estadio da Luz. Finally we’ll discuss some of the latest transfers to take place before the closing of the transfer window.

footballportugal Podcast – 19/01/09

Truffles and Carlsberg are being served up in equal measure on the podcast this week as we discuss the merits of the expensive fungus alongside the worth of a League Cup competition sponsored by probably the best lager in the world. All three Grandes have gone through to the semi-finals of the competition, along with Vítória de Guimarães. The draw will take place on Tuesday, 20 January.

As well as the Carlsberg Cup, we’ll also talk about Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira’s 24 years as a fee-paying FC Porto sócio, Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco’s forthcoming exit from the role, and the young and impressive Benfica defender Miguel Vitor’s revised monthly pay-cheque.

footballportugal Podcast – 16/12/08

Welcome to the final podcast of the year 2008. This week we have two parts for you: the first part of the podcast concentrates on the two cup competitions at the weekend, the Taça de Portugal and the Carlsberg Cup. On a terrible weekend for weather, the spectators stayed at home en masse, with just 300 people watching Estrela da Amadora beat Olivais e Moscavide 1-0 after 123 minutes of play. Sporting had their worst attendance ever at Alvalade XXI - just over 7000 – watching their Carlsberg Cup 3-0 victory over Marítimo. However, space was at a premium in Cinfães, where the third division team battled bravely against the mighty FC Porto but were eventually thumped 4-1. The big game of the weekend, Leixões versus Benfica, was something of a disappointment football-wise, with neither team putting on much of a display for the 7000 spectators who braved the wind and rain in Matosinhos. Leixões were the eventual victors on penalties, with their Portuguese goalkeeper Beto providing the heroics, saving from Reyes.

Dreams of glory have been well and truly burnt down as Portugal lost their second friendly in a row. Ronaldo and Nani conveniently find sick notes in their luggage and skip the 2-1 defeat to Greece. Scolari’s tactical ineptness becomes more evident and the only light at the end of the tunnel is a last minute change to a 4-4-2 long ball lump it to Hugo Almeida tactic. Oh, the future doesn’t look good for the Portuguese as Euro 2008 looms near.

In Part 1 we once again pick through the bones of yet another sorry display by the Portuguese national team.

In Part 2 we review probably… the most awful game of the year, the first Portuguese League Cup final between Vítoria de Setúbal and Sporting Clube de Portugal.A 0-0 bore draw settled on penalties without extra time thankfully won by the underdog, Setúbal. There’s a review of the game and a discussion on the bonuses the Setúbal players received.

Finally, in part 3 we look forward to this weekend’s fixtures. If Guimarães and Benfica lose and Porto win, they will be Champions for the third time, which leads us to our word of the week “tri-campeão” .
