Another week, another podcast in English about Portguese football.

This week the podcast has two parts. First we review the weekend’s games from the 13th Jornada. There were a couple of surprising results, with Benfica and Braga both dropping points. On the other hand, Porto go from strength to strength, wiping the floor with Atlético Madrid in midweek and then this weekend showing Vitória de Setúbal some mercy by taking their foot off the gas after 25 minutes. Despite Porto’s improved form, Hulk is still disappointing. It was a bad weekend for the Madeiran teams: both Marítimo and Nacional lost whilst Académica got back to their winning ways, defeating a Leixões team that once again had a player sent off.

In the second part of the podcast, we look at the Swedish players Sporting fancy and the Brazilian players Benfica have the hots for. We also turn to a familiar topic at this time of year: players not getting paid. This year it’s the players of Belenenses who are a pay-cheque or two short at Christmas.

footballportugal Podcast – 23/11/09

A two-part podcast after a week’s break, focussing on the past weekend’s Taça de Portugal fourth round ties and Portugal’s successful World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In the Taça, Sporting’s new manager Carlos Carvalhal got a victory from his first game in charge of the Leões, but only after quite a scare as their opponents, Pescadores da Costa de Caparica, went into the break with a 1-0 lead. Sporting’s Lisbon rivals Benfica were dumped out of the Cup at home to Vitória de Guimarães thanks to a goal from Gustavo Lazaretti. There were other shock exits, too, with Leiria, Leixões and Académica all being defeated by lower league opposition.

In part 2, we talk about Portugal and Bosnia-Herzegovina. We ask just where Raul Meireles found his form after playing so poorly all season, and why did the Bosnian football authorities show such disrespect to Portugal?

footballportugal Podcast – 22/09/09

After our sluggish start to the season we’re now firing on all cylinders, Sporting Braga style, and dishing up the finest podcast about Portuguese football in English you could hope to listen to.

There were some big games this weekend, none more so than Braga’s 5th consecutive victory over the tetracampeões FC Porto. Permanently on-loan Portista Alan got the vital and rather fluky goal that won the game. At the bottom of the league, there was an early season relegation six-pointer which permanently-managerless Setúbal amazingly won against a Naval side whose chicotada psicológica (check the glossary) must have left a lot to be desired. The other big game, on one of Portugal’s islands, was the Madeiran derby between Nacional and Marítimo, whose manager Carlos Carvalhal must be feeling the heat after his side failed to beat a Nacional team down to ten men for the whole of the second half.

In part 2 we review Leixões’ first victory of the season against Guimarães whilst covering the young Leixões striker Tiago Cintra with plaudits; he really does look good and is Portuguese! There were two boring 1-1 draws, and we skate over them before talking about Benfica’s victory over Leiria – possibly fortuitous depending on whether you think Benfica deserved the penalty which won them the game. Here’s FIFA’s rule on “Dangerous Play”,

Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens damage or harm to someone (including the player himself). It is committed with an opponent nearby and prevents the opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury. The action becomes an offence only when an opponent or the player himself is affected.  Playing in a dangerous manner involves no physical contact between the players. If there is a physical contact, the offence becomes a careless, reckless or excessive force offence punishable with a direct free kick or penalty kick.

Finally, in Part 3 we give you an update on the new direction the ‘Apito Dourado’ (Golden Whistle) scandal has taken and we talk a little bit about next weekend’s Portuguese general elections.

footballportugal Podcast – 20/04/09

Returning after a two-week hiatus, the footballportugal podcast is back to keep you informed about all the happenings in Portuguese football over the past 7 days.

In part one we’ll focus on the Liga. There’s no change at the top, with all three Grandes winning. The best game of the weekend was at the Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques in Guimarães, where Sporting made a last-gasp recovery to win 1-2 against Vitória. Nuno Assis, who was once on Sporting’s books, was really impressive for Guimarães but it was ‘The Ninja’ Derlei who turned it round for Sporting, literally putting the ‘fight’ into ‘fight back’ in the process. Both Porto and Benfica had comfortable victories at Académica and Vitória de Setúbal respectively. The only news to report from Benfica’s stroll in the park was the sight of Rui Costa smoking cigarettes on the touchline. At the bottom of the table, Trofense look to be even deeper in trouble after losing 2-1 at Rio Ave, and Belenenses climb out of the relegation zone after drawing 1-1 away at Maritimo. This was Maritimo’s fifth 1-1 draw in a row – not the greatest of starts for their new-ish manager, Carlos Carvalhal.

In part two we concentrate of the city of fortified red wine, Porto. FC Porto were deservedly knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United in midweek, and for the second year in succession they’re left regretting not having finished the tie in the first leg. We also concentrate on the worsening fortunes of Boavista, who are now bottom of the Liga de Honra. Hundreds of Boavisteiros marched from Estádio da Bessa to City Hall in Porto on Friday afternoon to get some media and political attention for their plight. The future looks horribly grim for the Axadrezados.

footballportugal Podcast – 02/03/09

Portuguese teams had mixed fortunes in Europe last week. Porto impressed, with Christian Rodriguez and Hulk playing out of their skins against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. Porto should’ve won the game by a fistful of goals but instead came away with a 2-2 draw, a result they may come to regret by the end of the second leg. On the other hand, Sporting suffered their worst home defeat and the heaviest European home game defeat for any Portuguese team on Wednesday when they were esmagados by Bayern Munich 5-0. The result left the ultras claque of Sporting, Juve Leo, singing for Paulo Bento to make good use of … er … someone’s excited manhood. In the aftermath of these big European fixtures, the Porto v Sporting clássico was something of a disappointment, ending 0-0 and with little to show except some ugly fouls and angry words between the players.

The one team who did profit from this result were Benfica, who beat Leixões 2-1 in a dramatic game at the Luz. We report on this and the 104th Benfica Gala, which took place last Saturday at the Casino Estoril. It’s a happy return for Carlos Carvalhal as his new team, Maritimo, beat his old team, Vitoria de Setubal, 5-1, helped by a Babá hat trick.
