footballportugal Podcast – 18/02/08

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Do you want to know the latest news about Portuguese football (or as some call it, “soccer”), told to you by two English guys in Lisbon? Well, graças a deus, you’ve come to the right place.

Part 1 of the podcast sorts through the weekend’s results. Our admiration for Lisandro Lopes breaks new boundaries as he helps FC Porto thump Marítimo 3-0 in Madeira. Vitoria Guimarães manager Manuel Cajuda is our new “King of Cool” after his unflinching, chin-stroking response to Nacional manager Predrag Jokanovic’s psychotic attack upon him after Nacional’s 1-0 victory. Binya’s throw-in technique is analysed in full after Benfica’s boring 0-2 victory at Naval and Sporting continue to improve in a rain-soaked victory over Estrela de Amadora. Finally, don’t miss our rundown of the latest thing in goal celebrations, as Boavista’s Nigerian striker Charles Obi making his debut, gives us the “boot phone.”

Part 2 concentrates on the Portuguese teams in Europe. Braga miss two penalties and go down 3-0 to Werder Bremen, Sporting impress with a 2-0 victory over Basle and Benfica fail to impress, struggling to a 1-0 victory over Nuremberg. The game was somewhat overshadowed by some serious trouble inside and outside the ground and we give a first person perspective on the unfortunate events that occurred.

Finally, in part 3, we have the word of the week “claques” and we discuss exactly what they are and what they do. The influence of Boney-M over Sporting Lisbon’s chant-writers is critically assessed whilst the presence of such famous supporters as Boavista’s Manuel and Benfica’s Barbas is briefly reflected upon.
