footballportugal Podcast – 29/09/08

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Welcome back once again to the podcast. After just four games, the Portuguese league is looking tighter than it has for quite some time. The Lisbon derby is the main topic of conversation in part 1 of this week’s podcast, with Benfica beating Sporting 2-0 in an enthralling clássico at the Luz. Porto beat Paços de Ferreira 2-0 in front of a half-empty Estadio do Dragão and Nacional blow the chance of going three points clear at the top of the table after being convincingly beaten by Lito Vidigal’s Estrela da Amadora, his brother Luís starring. We’ll review these games and all the others that took place at the weekend.

There’ll be a bit of politics in part 2, inspired by João Pinto’s appearance as a political commentator on the weekly current affairs show Bom Dia Portugal Semanal.  We talk about some of the many connections between politics and football in Portugal. Politicians such as Pedro Santana Lopes, Fátima Felgueiras, Alberto João Jardim and Valentim Loureiro will come under scrutiny, on the whole unfavourably, all using or having used football to further their political careers.

Finally, in part 3, we preview this week’s European fixtures, give some dodgy betting tips and look ahead to next week’s clássico between Sporting and Porto.

As always, keep your comments coming! We always welcome your feedback and the chance to discuss the opinions you have of the show, good or bad. For anything else that is for our eyes only, you can contact us by e-mail on info@footballportugalpodcast.com.
