footballportugal Podcast – 26/01/09

Monday, January 26th, 2009

With 15 games played, we reach the end of the primeira volta of the Portuguese Liga season and, surprise surprise, FC Porto are in first place after beating Braga 0-2. Braga file a complaint for the second week running after three clear penalties were overlooked by the referee, Paulo Costa (… although we only remember two of them …).

Poor refereeing is one of the hot topics in the Portuguese media right now and the poor reputation of referees is not helped by the President of the Referees Association, Vítor Pereira, who suggests the Portuguese public should stay away if they are unhappy with the standard of refereeing.

Both Sporting and Benfica would draw away from home at the weekend, Benfica putting in an uninspired display against Belenenses, leaving Quique Flores foaming at the mouth whilst he finds yet another of his players to criticise; this week it’s José Antonio Reyes that Quique can’t trust. Beyond the Big Three, Phil gets all excited about Sougou’s magnificent performance for Academica in their 2-1 victory over Vitória de Guimarães.

In part 2 we’ll tell you about Luís Figo’s movie debut, Barbas‘ new restaurant, A Bola’s vote on the best foreign player currently playing in Portugal, and why 5,000 people went to Boavista’s Bessa stadium, but not to watch Boavista. Also, on the 5th anniversary of his death, we remember the tragic passing of Miklós Fehér.

Do keep the comments coming; it’s great for us to be able to share our opinions after recording the podcast.

Truffles and Carlsberg are being served up in equal measure on the podcast this week as we discuss the merits of the expensive fungus alongside the worth of a League Cup competition sponsored by probably the best lager in the world. All three Grandes have gone through to the semi-finals of the competition, along with Vítória de Guimarães. The draw will take place on Tuesday, 20 January.

As well as the Carlsberg Cup, we’ll also talk about Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira’s 24 years as a fee-paying FC Porto sócio, Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco’s forthcoming exit from the role, and the young and impressive Benfica defender Miguel Vitor’s revised monthly pay-cheque.

Do keep the comments coming; it’s always interesting to get your feedback.

No podcast this week, sorry

My better half is writing a review of a luxury hotel in the Algarve and they’ve told her she can bring a guest, so I won’t be in Lisbon to watch Benfica tonight or make the pod tomorrow. Can’t say I’m overjoyed, I’d take a juicy Bifana over poulet foie gras any day of the week…

A new podcast for a new year and this podcast marks our first anniversary, so a happy birthday to ourselves.

In part 1 we look at the weekend’s games in the Liga, Porto stealing top spot away from Benfica, who are currently still trying to bury all their heads in the sand after an embarrassing 2-0 away defeat to lowly Liga new boys Trofense. Porto beat Nacional in Madeira and Sporting also won away against Setúbal, piling the pressure on their coach Daúto Faquirá. However, he isn’t the first casualty of the year; that award goes to Rio Ave’s João Eusébio, who was afastado after their 2-4 defeat at home to Vitória de Guimarães.

In Part 2 we look at the current situation in the Liga Vitalis (second tier), with an impressive Olhanense beating Santa Clara away in the Azores, 2-0. The team look very well coached and organised by Jorge Costa, who may well find himself in the Porto hot seat in years to come. Beyond this we’ll talk a little about one of our favourite players, Belenenses’ José Pedro, and the Portuguese beer company Sagres‘ sponsorship of Portuguese football.

Let us know your thoughts on the podcast by leaving a comment.
