footballportugal Podcast – 27/10/08

Monday, October 27th, 2008

With Porto looking as vulnerable as they did the last time they lost the Liga here in Portugal, being deservedly beaten 2-3 at home to Leixões, it was up to Benfica and Sporting to take advantage. Benfica just about did, beating Naval 2-1 at home. However, Sporting wasted their opportunity to gain points on the Dragons, only managing a 0-0 draw against Paços de Ferreira in a boring game at Mata Real. Sitting top of the table are Nacional, who beat Setúbal 1-0 at home thanks to a Nené penalty. Phil reports on Belenenses against Vitória Guimarães, where Zé Pedro scored both goals in a 1-1 draw. The picture below shows the almost empty stadium during the game, which was played on a beautiful autumn evening. Some people just don’t know what they’re missing. So, Nacional are on equal points with Leixões whilst Benfica trail a point behind in 3rd place with 12 points. We review all of this and more in part 1 of the podcast.

Porto’s misery at the weekend only built upon the despair felt by the Portistas who witnessed their side’s first home defeat (0-1) in 20 Champions League games against Dynamo Kiev last Tuesday. Despite Porto’s failure, it was a great week for Portuguese teams in Europe, with victories for Sporting and Sporting Braga, and Benfica came home from Berlin happy to take a point which could have been three were it not for a terrible tactical decision by Quique Flores, replacing the effective Katsouranis with the ineffective Carlos Martins in the 71st minute of the 1-1 draw, inviting Hertha Berlin to score the equaliser. This will all be discussed in part 2 along with our reaction to Portsmouth’s sour grapes after being royally whipped by Braga in the UEFA Cup.

Finally, in part 3 we give an update on Vitória the eagle’s bid for freedom from the Luz, on Nacional’s old lady claque, and a blow by blow account of each stone thrown (allegedly) at Cristian Rodrigues’ car by the Porto claque Super Dragões last Saturday night.

footballportugal Podcast – 20/10/08

The thrill of the Cup is upon us once more as Portugal experiences the third round of the Taça da Portugal. Steve attends Fabril Barreiro versus Olivais e Moscavide and comes back singing the praises of the experience, together with a few songs of the Olivais e Moscavide claque, the Moscaknights, who cheered their team on to a 0-1 away victory and into the draw for the 4th round. Joining them, just, will be Benfica, who scraped through on penalties against impressive second division (third tier) outfit Penafiel at the Luz. Liedson returned to his scoring ways for Sporting against Leiria, and Tarik Sektioui returned to the scoresheet for Porto against Sertanense.

In part two it’s inquisition time as we take a look at Portugal’s poor displays in the World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Albania and the aftermath.

Finally, in part 3, we have a few bits and pieces taken from the sports dailies to report, like luxury Figo watches and A Bola trying perhaps a little too hard to get Cristiano Ronaldo the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

Feel free to leave any messages about the podcast; we always like to read them and will definitely reply (time permitting). Otherwise, all non-public questions, doubts, complaints, comments, suggestions etc. can be sent to the usual e-mail address: info@footballportugalpodcast.com

footballportugal Podcast – 07/10/08

Monday, October 6th, 2008

We bring you a bumper 4-part Podcast this week as a consequence of this weekend’s somewhat anarchic Portuguese league schedule.

In part 1 we review Porto’s victory away to Sporting, leaving the Lions licking their wounds after two defeats in successive weeks to their main rivals. Estrela Amadora have their deserved moment in the sun, Lito Vidigal’s team reaching second place in the league after a 1-0 victory at home to bottom of the table whipping boys Trofense. Finally, Casimiro Mior was probably hiding behind the back seat of the team bus when it arrived back at the Restelo to find 200 fans calling for his head on a stick after his team scraped a 1-1 draw away to Naval.

In Part 2 we review last week’s European fixtures. A fantastic win for Benfica against Napoli in front of a packed Luz saw them go through to the group stage of the UEFA Cup along with Sporting Braga. However, Vitória de Setúbal, Marítimo and Vitória de Guimarães were all eliminated from the competition. Porto were humiliated away to Arsenal in the Champions League while Sporting cruised to an expected victory against Basel.

In part 3 we take a look at some historic clubs who were once found playing football in the top divisions but are now found languishing in the lower depths of the Portuguese league pyramid.

Finally, in part 4 the Podcast takes technological leaps and bounds to pastures unknown as Phil phones in his opinion on Benfica’s 1-1 draw against Leixões, with the fantastic Wesley netting a late equaliser.

Thanks for listening.
