footballportugal Podcast – 28/04/08

Monday, April 28th, 2008

The tension is mounting as the season draws to a close.

In part 1 we focus on the teams aiming to get those Champions League spots. Benfica stay in with a shout after beating a soon to be Jorge Jesus-less Belenenses 2-0. Despite wide spread rumours suggesting Porto would make things easy for Guimarães, Ricardo Quaresma inspires the Dragons to a 5-0 thrashing. The Vítoria supporters are out in force… so much so that the Guimarães team bus had a hard job getting into the stadium. Finally, Sporting amble on, coming from behind to beat Marítimo 2-1 thanks to two goals by the normally useless Romagnoli.

In part 2 the focus is on the battle against relegation. Leiria give up the fight but Leixões keep on punching with their 1-3 away win. Paços lose 1-2 away to an António Caldas-managed Braga and Nacional manager/thug Pedrag Jokanovic is under fire from the Nacional supporters as they lose 0-3 at home to Académica, who are now safe from the drop. Boavista lose away to Naval thanks to a Delfim goal, who is then sent off in the second half. We also have more on the drama unfolding in the Liga da Honra and yet more insight into Portuguese natural spring water.

Finally, in part 3 we talk about the various nicknames, or alcunhas, of some of the more famous Portuguese players, presidents and teams. We’re sure to have missed out loads so we’d be really grateful if you could let us know of any interesting ones that we’ve forgotten to mention. footballportugal Podcast – 22/04/08

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

With so much drama both on and off the pitch in the last seven days here in Portugal, it’s no wonder why we’re returning this week with our biggest ever podcast.

In part 1 we analyse last week’s Taça de Portugal semi-finals. Setúbal choke in a packed Bonfim to a ruthless FC Porto, who book their ticket to Jamor with a simpe 3-0 win. The other semi-final was without a doubt the game of the year and probably the game of the decade here in Portugal. Sporting, 2-0 down to Benfica at home, come back to beat their local rivals 5-3. We have a first hand account of the game, the Olés of the Benfiquistas before half-time, Rui Costa’s four letter tirade to Chalana after Di Maria was substituted for Sepsi, Derlei’s touchline hysterics and the never ending limits to Maxi Pereira’s awfulness. We also talk briefly about Karen Jardel.

In Part 2 we look at the various league results of the past seven days. A run of 3 straight defeats means it’s curtains for Manuel Machado at Sporting Braga, who lost 4-1 away to Marítimo last Saturday. The battle for The Champions League spots gets more perverse as the season draws to its end. Guimarães draw away to Académica 0-0, Benfica unsuprisingly lose 2-0 at Porto and the big surprise of the weekend was bottom of the league Leiria’s 4-1 annihilation of Sporting. Benfica make the news for events off the pitch as their President Luís Filipe Vieira starts to fall rapidly out of favour with the Benfiquistas. In the battle at the bottom Leixões draw 0-0 with Amadora and Paços draw 2-2 with Naval. Serious affairs off the pitch at Boavista where a player’s strike is called off at the last minute as the board of directors struggle to find the money to pay the player’s salaries. Not only that, but the Boavista directors get well and truly duped by a so called multi-millionaire, Sergio Silva, who convinces them he can save the club but ends up being interviewed by police for fraud. Finally, we report on the official footballportugal Podcast day out in Belém as we watch Belenenses destroy Setúbal 5-0. Not only was the game amazing but the gossiping Belenenses supporters share all their knowledge with us about the possible future destination of their manager Jorge Jesus.

Finally, in part 3 we give a round up of the possible ups and downs in the Liga Vitalis/Liga da Honra/Second Division.

footballportugal Podcast – 14/04/08

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Welcome back to our 14th podcast covering the 26th “jornada” of the week, which covers the first of many words of the week this week. We start with the sad story of Leixões player Jaime’s suprise retirement from the professional game after attempting and failing to make a ‘Panenka’ style penalty in the last minute of their game against Belenenses. Scandal and shame are the words to sum up Benfica’s 3-0 defeat at home to Académica, the first time Os Estudantes have won at the Luz for 54 years. The defeat was something of a “goleada” and we’ll be debating whether this word means a ‘thrashing’ or a ‘tonking’. Benfica’s defeat meant that Guimarães could gain a 3 point lead over them, which they duly did with a 1-0 win over Boavista. Porto are doing their training at go-kart track in Palmela and beating Setúbal in the process in the first of their 2 games against them within the space of four days. Mariano scores a goal assisted by his handling of the ball and we’ll discuss the age old conundrum of whether a hand ball is ball to hand or hand to ball. Paços de Ferreira keep their hopes alive with a shock 1-2 win at Nacional whilst the other Madeiran team, Marítimo, impress against a woeful Naval. Finally, Sporting leapfrog Benfica into 3rd place with a 2-0 win over Leixões. Steve’s very impressed with the young Leixões attacking player Jorge Gonçalves and also somewhat dismayed at the vanity of Miguel Veloso.

Part 2 doesn’t try to find any excuses for Sporting’s terrible display in their exit to Rangers in the UEFA Cup. Moutinho spent the match crying, Phil thinks Romagnoli is a waste of space and the Sporting fans were as apathetic towards their team as we feared they might be. Congratulations to Rangers and their fans, who behaved impeccably and supported their team fantastically. We also look forward to this week’s Taça de Portugal semi-finals. The two Lisbon teams go head-to -head in a battle of the weakest that is impossible to predict. Setúbal play Porto yet again and we all hope that they can beat them this time with a full strength team.

Finally in part 3 we hypothesise about the chances of the 3 teams vying for the two available Champion’s League spots and we both agree on which team will win the last automatic spot, which team will get the qualifying spot and which team will be licking their wounds and counting the cost of failure to qualify. Our unanimous decision will probably be very surprising but undeniable.

footballportugal Podcast – 7/04/08

Monday, April 7th, 2008

The finishing touches have been made to Porto’s champion sashes as they annihilate Estrela Amadora 6-0 to become the 2007/8 season champions of Portugal. In all honestly they were the only decent team in the league and had sewn up the league with the win over Benfica last December. So, this week’s podcast celebrates the achievements of the blue and white team from Portugal’s tripe eating city by the river Douro.

Part 1 reviews the weekend’s results and the big chase for 2nd place as Sporting’ 2-0 victory over Sporting Braga helps them make up 2 points on Benfica and Guimarães who both drew at the weekend. The Medeiran derby is played in horrendous conditions with Marítimo winning 1-0.

Part 2 sees us giving our marks out of ten for the players of FC Porto and our general opinion about just how good they are.

Finally in Part 3 we review Sporting’s UEFA Cup game agains Glasgow Rangers and look forward to next weekend’s fixtures.
