footballportugal Podcast – 27/03/08

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Dreams of glory have been well and truly burnt down as Portugal lost their second friendly in a row. Ronaldo and Nani conveniently find sick notes in their luggage and skip the 2-1 defeat to Greece. Scolari’s tactical ineptness becomes more evident and the only light at the end of the tunnel is a last minute change to a 4-4-2 long ball lump it to Hugo Almeida tactic. Oh, the future doesn’t look good for the Portuguese as Euro 2008 looms near.

In Part 1 we once again pick through the bones of yet another sorry display by the Portuguese national team.

In Part 2 we review probably… the most awful game of the year, the first Portuguese League Cup final between Vítoria de Setúbal and Sporting Clube de Portugal.A 0-0 bore draw settled on penalties without extra time thankfully won by the underdog, Setúbal. There’s a review of the game and a discussion on the bonuses the Setúbal players received.

Finally, in part 3 we look forward to this weekend’s fixtures. If Guimarães and Benfica lose and Porto win, they will be Champions for the third time, which leads us to our word of the week “tri-campeão” .

We hope you enjoy the show, next weeks podcast will be recorded on Tuesday. Please get in touch with us, either leave a message here on the site or contact us by e-mail on info@footballportugalpodcast.com

Thank you for listening.

footballportugal Podcast – 17/03/08

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Faster than a Lopes own goal, more spectacular than a Ricardo Esteves left footed screamer, bigger than Chalana’s moustache and with jokes slower than a Maxi Pereira dribble, footballportugal Podcast returns once more with all the latest Portuguese football (or soccer) news in English.

Part 1 concentrates on all the weekend’s action and the stories surrounding it. Guimarães are the Goldilocks to Benfica’s three bears, as Manuel Cajuda’s side sleep temporarily in Benfica’s second place bed after beating Leiria 0-1 thanks to a Ghilas goal. Academica and Belenenses play a 0-0 bore draw but we talk about the various Belenenses players arranging flights to pastures new in the next season. Leixões are unlucky to be beaten at home 1-2 by Porto in a bad tempered game and Boavista go from strength to strength with a 2-1 victory over Estrela de Amadora, assisted in no small part by the referee. We also give the latest news on the problems with the payments of the Amadora players, who may go on strike this week if their payments are delayed once again. The suprise of the week was Paços de Ferreira’s 2-1 victory over Setúbal, watched by Porto President Pinto da Costa, taking an interest in his on-loan playmaker Cláudio Pitbull. Braga’s revival continues, the beat Naval 3-0 and Benfica’s poor form carries on, with a lackluster 1-1 draw at Marítimo. We also give our inside tip on Sebastião Lazaroni possibly being one of the leaders in the race for the Benfica hot seat.

Part 2 picks through the bones of Benfica’s UEFA cup failure and most importantly Makakula’s unbelievable 4th minute open goal miss. Sporting were in far better form, going through to the quarter finals to face Rangers with a 1-0 win against Bolton courtesy of an impressive display by Bruno Pereirinha. There is an interesting historical fact about a previous Sporting European fixture against Rangers and with Sporting doing well in all cup competitions at the moment (they play in the final of the Carlsberg Cup this weekend agains Setúbal), we look into the idea of whether Paulo Bento is the new Rafa Benitiez?

Finally, in part 3 focusses on the various sports newspapers and magazines available in Portugal and their affiliations with the various Portuguese clubs.

Because there are no fixtures this weekend other than the Carlsberg Cup final, we are going to postpone the next podcast until next Wednesday 27th March, which is the day after Portugal’s game to Greece in Germany. With nothing at stake, not even pride, surely Scolari can finally direct the selecção to victory over the old enemy, or maybe not…

Thanks for all the comments and e-mails, keep them coming, either here on the site or directly to our e-mail address info@footballportugalpodcast.com .

Thank you for listening.

footballportugal Podcast – 11/03/08

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Welcome to our bandwidth busting 10th podcast running at an almighty 53 minutes, everyone of which is jam packed with all the latest news and views about the current happenings in Portuguese football alongside some idle chatter about which Brazilian players are the prettiest.

In Part 1 we celebrate Boavista’s 2-3 victory at Belenenses and discuss whether Jorge Ribeiro’s current form is good enough to sneak him into the first 11 of the Portuguese national team, maybe at the expense of his more famous, older and fatter brother Maniche. Sporting go back to their normal habit of losing, going down 0-2 at Guimarães whose chances of European football next season seem assured whilst Sporting’s are looking ever more precarious. Porto win as ever and somewhere in the podcast we might mention that José Antonio Camacho has left Benfica. We’ll have an analysis of why Camacho left and also review the names already being bandied about as possible replacements, like Fatih Terim, “The Turkish Option”.

In Part 2 we review the mixed fortunes of the Portuguese teams in Europe. Large sighs of despair as Porto’s target men miss their chances and the team go crashing out on penalties against Schalke 04. Sporting produce an impressive display away at Bolton and Oscar Cardozo proves that for every sweet left foot there is a sour right elbow.

Finally, in part 3 we look at the budgets of Portuguese clubs in the Liga BWin, which go to show just how excellent a job Carlos Carvalhal is doing at Vítoria de Setúbal and why he may well be the next foolhardy manager to warm the Benfica hotseat.

This being our 10th podcast, we’d like to thank all of you that have discovered us, bookmarked us in your favourites or subscribed to one of our RSS feeds. We’d like to give a special thanks to any of you who may have mentioned us in football messageboards or on blogs, your support is greatfully appreciated.

footballportugal Podcast – 03/03/08

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Derbies and stalemates are the order of the weekend in Portugal as teams in The Minho, Porto and Lisbon go head to head. The Minho derby between Braga and Guimarães has little report other that an increasing admiration of Braga’s little annoying right-back, João Perreira. There’s another stalemate at The Bessa as a new look attack focussed Boavista hold Porto 0-0. After the game, Ricardo Quaresma’s comments about exactly who decided he could put his feet up for the past couple of weeks to catch up on his favourite daytime TV programmes causes a bit of uproar, which we analyse in full. Sporting and Benfica drew 1-1, there were penalty incidents and possible sending-offs galore, with an actual sending off chucked in for good measure and we’ll have an opinion on everything. Setúbal were the only team to actually win this weekend and the never ending praise for Cláudio Pitbull goes on and on, better than Beckham? More influential than Riquelme? We reckon.

In part 2, we review the previous week’s Taça de Portugal fixtures, the three grandes went through alongside Setúbal and one can only hope that this fantastic side get a home draw in tomorrow’s draw. We debate which Moreirense kit looks the best, the yellow one or the green one? We also look forward to this week’s European fixtures.

Finally in part 3, with the recent sad passing of Belenenses’ president Cabral Ferreira, we talk about the way Portuguese people respect one minute’s silences at games. On a lighter note, we have a culinary cornucopia of words of the week this week as we let you know exactly what bifanas, sandes do couratos and entremadas are and just what you ask for to wash them down with.

Unforunately there were some problems with our server at the weekend so some comments posted about the last show were lost, alongside updates to the glossary. Even still, please keep the comments coming, we really appreciate them, either leave them here on the site or e-mail us at: info@footballportugalpodcast.com

Thank you for listening.
