It’s the last weekend of league football in Portugal and the penultimate podcast of the 2009/2010 season; Phil’s kept the tears at bay to make it following Boavista’s shock descent into the dark depths of the Portuguese third tier.
In part 1 of the podcast we’ll focus on the teams that went down from the Liga as well as those who came up. Going down are Belenenses, who lost 3-1 at Benfica. Brazillian striker Saulo will take a large share of the blame, needlessly being sent off before half-time with Belenenses level at 1-1. benfica coach Quique Flores did a lap of (dis)honour after the game and was generally applauded by Benfiquistas. Joining Belenenses will be Trofense, losing1-0 away to Paços, whose goalscorer William came back from a long lay-off to score the winner. Coming up from the Liga de Honra will be União de Leiria, who have had a magnificent turn-around this season largely due to their coach, Manuel Fernandes, who took them from 13th in November to 2nd at the end of the season. Going down from the Liga da Honra are Boavista and Gondomar, with Fátima and Chaves replacing them.
In part 2, we concentrate on the festas do título taking place at Olhanense and Porto as the two clubs take their Liga da Honra and Liga crowns, respectively. Olhanense win the prize for most imaginative face paint and hair dye, but Porto have the far bigger celebration, their open-top bus parading through the streets of the city until the early hours.
As mentioned at the beginning and end of the podcast, we want your votes for player of the season 2009 /2010. Please send an e-mail to info@footballportugalpodcast.com, specifying who you think were the top 5 players of the season and in what order. Get your votes in before midday on Monday June 1st and we’ll compile the votes to create a footballportugal Podcast player of the season.
Looking forward to hearing your opinions and receiving your votes.

Hello Gentlemen ,
Like I mentioned in my last post congratulations to Porto for yet another league championship … As for Sporting all I can say is ” when are they ever going to win ? ” for all the stability and non loss of key elements on the team , they still have nothing to show for it !!! If not this year when Benfica’s stride was never found , When ?
Speaking of Benfica , I am in agreement with you with respect to Quique Flores ” RESPECT ” being the operative word… I agree with you that we will never probably win anything meaningfull with him ( for all the reasons we’ve mentioned in the past ) I also agree that he should probably never have been hired but one thing I agree with Quique is that the administration have been disrespectfull to him by signing players without asking him and shopping for a new coach without talking to him… He might be many things but he has always been respectul towards the club, And what’s worse is that now they look like morons because unless they buy out his contract IN FULL including assisting staff , they can not change coach… And if that was not enough they also have to buy out Jorge Jesus’s contract too if they want him … What a bunch of rinky dink amateurs … ( and this is coming from a lifelong Benfiquista )
At this point the cost in rescinding all the contracts in question in combination with the probable results of signing yet another coach makes for quite a can of worms …
Like you theme song states ” Isto é que é bom , Isto é que é bom para a gente se entender … ” ( This is good , this is good so that we can understand each other )
Indeed !!!!
PS : we haven’t heard the end of this bordello !!!
As always keep up the good work !!!
Thanks
Rob
In Record yesterday, they said that it will cost Benfica €3.5million to pay off Quique and his staff, money I’m almost certain Benfica cannot afford at present. I’ve mentioned it a couple of times on the podcast but I really can’t help expressing Rui Costa’s failure in trying to transform the club. In all honesty, they’ve become progressively worse each season since he returned.
I’m with Phil tears for i am a Boavista fan! as you said now on the dark depths of 3rd tier… Bollocks! Sorry! I’ll be following you! Thanks!
Hi!
@ Rob: I think the song lyrics say – “(…) Isto é que é bom para a gente se entreter…” and not “Isto é que é bom para a gente se entender … ”
Entreter = Entretain, Amuse.
Cheers!

@ Hugo :
LOL !!!! That’s even more funny !!! You gotta give Benfica that !!! When they’re not entertaining on the pitch they’re a bloody soap opera off the pitch…
…. a month ago it looked like it was going to be a boring silly season , but now we have the makings of a soap opera… The only thing missing is Carolina Salgado’s declaration of love for Quique Flores… Then LFV in a jealous rage banishes Quique to coach Boavista… And Rui Costa saves the season by going behind the bench to coach the team himself !!!
You heard it here first !!!! LOL
Cheers
Rob
If I have time I’ll re-record the song and add the whole thing to the end of the podcast next week.
Just checked the podcast e-mail. Thanks to everyone who has so far cast their votes, there is already a clear early leader in the race for this most prestigious of titles!
… and it’s not Pablo Aimar, is my guess.

And I guess it’s not Carlos Martins or Balboa either, ehehehe…
