Steve is hurting a bit after his op, so we’re afraid there won’t be a podcast this week. We’re hoping to be back next Monday with a super League Cup Special. Keep tuned!

    As melhoras !

  4. Rui says:

Get well soon Steve! E viva o Benfica!!!

  5. Thanks for the kind words!

Complications during my surgery meant not everything went as planned but it’s not the end of the world. To make matters worse, I’ve also got a nasty dry cough/cold; it’s really not been the best of weeks…

  6. Carlos says:

You can’t say fairer than that.

    Get well soon Steve.

  7. ben says:

never mind his teeth, i’m worried for steve’s heart after that finish…

  8. ben says:

aguero, what a finish! sporting got done there, awful defending, but that was beautiful technique…

  9. ben says:

was about to write how useless polga has been, but he’s kind of made up for it…great game.

Fabulous performance from Benfica, and fully deserved aggregate win (well done Steve!), despite all the missed chances.

Sporting less so … but they were terribly depleted, and they did put their heart into it, at least.

  11. Brilliant night, fantastic performance from just about every Benfica player, can’t decided who my man of the match would be, either Maxi or Javi Garcia. Great draw for the next two rounds, Benfica should be too strong for Liverpool and Valencia or Atletico don’t worry me.

Pity about Sporting, I’ve got no idea what happened between Costinha and Izmailov before the game to result in his removal from the squad. He was certainly missed on the night. I must say, the sporting fans standing ovation after the final whistle was admirable in a season in which their commitment to the team has been found wanting.

I know who wasn’t the man of the match: Saviola. The waiter in the bar where I saw it said, and rightly: “That’s half an hour too late” when Jesus took him off. Awful. Fábio Coentrão was excellent.

And so Benfica draw the short straw: Liverpool. I think Benfica have the better team, but there will always be that psychological pressure of playing against an English side – the Portuguese are terrified of them.

Still, they’ve beaten them once before, a couple of seasons back, so why not this?

  13. Karl says:

Congrats.. tough draw.. Considering Liverpool are having an awful season.. I think winning the Europa league could be Benitez’only hope of keeping his job. Even at that I doubt he’ll stay. Will be a tricky tie.. Never know which Liverpool will turn up..
And only 3 days before they meet Sporting…

  14. What have Rául Meireles and Bruno Alves got to do to get sent off in this game?

  15. Airton is going to be a star.

  16. Carlos says:

Fantastic goal by Maniche for Cologne on Saturday.
